Public Welfare Medal awarded to Thorn George Thorn, Levine Professor of Medicine Emeritus, has been named by the National Academy of Science to receive its 1997 Public Welfare Medal. The award honors Thorn's 40 years of contributions to the application of science to public welfare. These efforts include helping to establish and lead the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, the country's largest nonprofit organization dedicated to medical research and education. Thorn served as physician-in-chief of Peter Bent Brigham (now Brigham and Women's) Hospital from 1942 to 1972 and participated in development of the organ transplantation program there. Dissertation prize goes to GSAS student Stuart Semmel, a doctoral student at the Graduate School of Arts and Sciences, has won the 1996-97 Bowdoin Graduate Prize for Dissertations in English -- a prize of $3,000 -- for his work, "Reading the Tangible Past: British Tourism and Collecting After Waterloo." Radcliffe publications win CASE awards The Campaign for Radcliffe case statement and the Radcliffe News were awarded Gold Medals by Division I of the Council for Advancement and Support of Education (CASE) at the division's conference on Feb. 4 in Boston. The case statement also received the Best in Show Award, a special gold medal, as the most outstanding publication overall, for its innovative use of personal narrative to build support for the College. Radcliffe News was cited for its superior achievement and creativity in the newsletters category. Published four times a year, the News contains short articles and pertinent information of interest to alumnae, friends, and members of the Harvard and Radcliffe communities. The case statement won a gold medal in the Category of Development. The Campaign for Radcliffe, which runs through June 2000, is designed to achieve two major goals: to enhance the College's work through greater engagement with its students, alumnae, friends, and leaders, and to raise $100 million in new resources to support an ambitious agenda throughout the College in education, research, and policy programs. CASE is a national professional organization of university administrators.
