President, provost to hold office hours for students

President Neil L. Rudenstine and Provost Harvey Fineberg will hold office hours for students in their Massachusetts Hall offices on a first-come, first-served basis on the following dates: President Rudenstine on Monday, May 10, from 4 to 5 p.m.; Provost Fineberg on Thursday, May 13, from 4 to 5 p.m.

International Office begins summer schedule

The Harvard International Office (HIO) located in Holyoke Center, Room 864, resumed its normal summer hours on Monday, May 3. The office will be open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday until Aug. 6, 1999, with the exception of two University-wide holidays: the Memorial Day observance on Monday, May 31, and the Independence Day observance on Monday, July 5.

Funding available for women's health research, education projects

The Harvard Medical School's Center of Excellence in Women's Health (COE) is offering a new Harvard Medical School Fund for Women's Health. The Fund provides one-year grants of up to $45,000 (renewable for a second year, based on productivity) to help Medical School faculty initiate new, collaborative, inter-institutional projects in basic research, clinical research, or education in women's health. Applications must include collaboration among either: 1) a Center of Excellence Partners institution (Massachusetts General Hospital and/or Brigham and Women's Hospital) and CareGroup institution (Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center); or 2) a Center of Excellence Partners institution (MGH and/or BWH) and/or CareGroup institution (BIDMC) and Harvard Medical School.

All applicants must have a doctoral degree (M.D. or Ph.D., or equivalent), must have completed their postdoctoral training by the award date, and must not have active salary support from training grants or fellowships supporting the proposed project at the beginning of the award period.

The deadline for submission is June 15. Proposals are due July 15. Award recipients will be notified by Sept. 15, with an award date of Oct. 1.

Book on Guatemala is subject of book party and panel

A panel and book party to celebrate the 1999 edition of Bitter Fruit: The Story of the American Coup in Guatemala will take place Thursday, May 13, at 6 p.m. at 61 Kirkland St., Cambridge. Bitter Fruit, by Stephen Schlesinger and Stephen Kinzer, is an account of U.S. intervention in Guatemala in the 1950s. The Rockefeller Center for Latin American Studies is a cosponsor of the event.
