Winthrop Madrigalists to hold auditions

The Winthrop Madrigalists, an undergraduate chamber choir whose repertory includes music from the Renaissance and Baroque periods, will hold auditions on Saturday, Sept. 25, and Sunday, Sept. 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. in the Tonkens Room, Winthrop House.

Talk on W.E.B. Du Bois

Henry Louis Gates Jr., the W.E.B. Du Bois Professor of the Humanities, will speak on "W.E.B. Du Bois and the Encyclopedia Africana, 1909-1963" on Wednesday, Sept. 29, from noon to 2 p.m. in the Thompson Room, Barker Center. The talk is part of the Du Bois Institute's Fall Colloquia. Feel free to bring a lunch.

Milton Fund applicants sought

The William F. Milton Fund makes research funds available to faculty members of Harvard University. The Fund supports studies of a medical, geographical, historical, or scientific nature. Studies must be either in the interests of promoting the physical and material welfare of the human race or of investigating and determining the value and importance of a discovery or invention.

Preference is given to new and original projects, especially indepent work of recently appointed young faculty members.

Program on coping with worrying to be offered

A program on "Worry: How to Manage the Negative and Positive" with speaker Edward Hallowell, clinical instructor at Harvard Medical School and director of the Hallowell Center for Cognitive and Emotional Health, will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 28, from noon to 1 p.m. at Agassiz House, Lyman Common Room. To register, call the Faculty and Staff Assistance Program at 495-4357. The event is cosponsored by the O ffice of Work and Family.

Harvard Course in Reading and Study Strategies to be offered

Through readings, films, and classroom exercises, students learn to read more purposively, selectively, and with greater speed and comprehension. This class meets for three weeks, Monday through Friday, for one hour. The cost is $150. The fall sessions will be held Oct. 12-29, 8 to 9 a.m., and Oct. 25-Nov. 12, 4 to 5 p.m. To register, please contact the Bureau of Study Counsel at (617) 495-2581.

Room change affects talk by author next week

The reading by Sergio Troncoso, author of The Last Tortilla and Other Stories, on Friday, Sept. 24, at 4:30 p.m. has been changed from the Adams House Common Room to the Quincy House Junior Common Room.
