Orientation teaches teachers

The Derek Bok Center's Winter Teaching Orientation for faculty and teaching fellows will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 30, from 9 a.m. to 4:45 p.m. on the third floor of the Science Center. The program will feature presentations for beginning teachers such as "The First Day of Class," and "Tips for New Teachers." For more experienced teachers, the program will include a presentation entitled "Teaching Scenarios that Bridge Cultural Gaps," and a case study on teaching. Meals will be provided for faculty and fellows who register by e-mailing bokcenter@fas.harvard.edu or by calling (617) 495-4869.

Upcoming symposium on health disparities

As part of the Future of Public Health Millennial Symposium Series, the Harvard School of Public Health and Dean Barry R. Bloom will host "Reducing U.S. Health Disparities," on Thursday, Feb. 8, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at the School's Snyder Auditorium. The discussion - moderated by ABC News Medical Editor Dr. Timothy Johnson - will explore the role of new genetic technologies, social policy, health care, and Healthy People 2010, a national health initiative, in the future of public health.

Panelists for the symposium include North General Hospital President and CEO Harold Freeman; Nancy Adler, professor of medical psychology, University of California, San Francisco; and Thomas Boyce, professor of epidemiology and child development, University of California, Berkeley.

A brief reception with the speakers will take place immediately following the program.
