Sackler Saturdays to return for another season

This fall the Harvard University Art Museums (HUAM) will return with a second year of the Sackler Saturdays program for families and children. Families with children ages 6 to 11 are again invited to explore artworks from ancient cultures and distant lands in Asia, Europe, and this year, Africa. The program takes place in the Arthur M. Sackler Museum, and is free and open to the public.

The theme of the first Sackler Saturday, to be held Sept. 28, is "Masks and Faces From Faraway Places." On Oct. 26, "Nature's Designs in Art" will be featured, and on Nov. 23, "Ancient Entertainment: Music, Games, and Dance in Art" will be the focus.

Activities include minitours of the galleries, hands-on art projects, sketching, storytelling, and self-guided activities that families can do together. The program runs from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on a drop-in basis.

The first Sackler Saturday will include a field trip across the street to the Fogg Art Museum to view an exhibit of African masks. Allen Keston, children's librarian from the Cambridge Public Library, will be on hand for storytelling, and artists will be available to offer sketching lessons.

"We're delighted to bring Sackler Saturdays back this fall. The enthusiastic response last year confirms our conviction that learning in a museum can be fun and gratifying for the whole family," said Lynne Stanton, coordinator of public education at HUAM. Registration is not necessary and children must be accompanied by an adult.
