King commemoration set for Memorial Church:

Lani Guinier, Bennett Boskey Professor of Law, will deliver the keynote address

A service commemorating the life and mission of the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. will be held on Jan. 20 at 5 p.m. in the Memorial Church. Lani Guinier, Bennett Boskey Professor of Law, will deliver the keynote address, and the Kuumba Singers, a 90-member choral group of Harvard undergraduates dedicated to the expression of black creativity and spirituality, will perform.

Honoring the enduring challenge of King's "I Have a Dream" speech, the congregation will be invited to fill out cards with their own "Dreams." During the service, cards will be collected and read aloud by students.

Harvard's United Ministry, a group of 42 chaplains representing different faiths, whose primary mission is to work with and provide services for undergraduates and graduate students, hosts the annual service. In addition to the yearly King service, the United Ministry co-sponsored the University's observance of the anniversary of the Sept. 11 attacks. Ten thousand attended the Harvard Yard service on Sept. 11, 2002.

The Memorial Church, the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, and the Black Students Association are co-sponsoring the King service. A reception with refreshments, sponsored by the Harvard Foundation for Intercultural and Race Relations, will be held immediately following the service in the Buttrick Room at the Memorial Church.
