STAGE to kick off with 'An Evening for Art':

New student group wants to inspire youth

A new student organization dedicated to inspiring and empowering Boston youth through the performing arts, Harvard STAGE (Student Theater Advancing Growth and Empowerment) will present its inaugural event - "An Evening for Art" - on May 5 from 7 to 10 p.m. in Agassiz Theatre.

Celebrating young people in the arts in Greater Boston, "An Evening for Art" will feature a panel discussion on the crisis in arts funding with Hobbs Professor of Cognition and Education Howard Gardner, state Sen. Jarrett Barrios '90, and other distinguished guests. The evening will include performances by community arts groups Arts In Progress, the Boston Arts Academy, and the Massachusetts High School Drama Guild.

Next year, the organization hopes to step up its involvement in the community by teaming with a local public school and introducing art into its after-school curriculum with the weekly help of student volunteers.

Tickets for the May 5 performance of 'An Evening for Art' are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and senior citizens. For advance tickets, call the Harvard Box Office at (617) 495-9775.
