Kokkalis graduate student workshop seeks papers

The Kokkalis Program on Southeastern and East-Central Europe, the Kennedy School of Government, and the Southeastern Europe Study Group at the Minda de Gunzburg Center for European Studies will hold the seventh annual Kokkalis Graduate Student Workshop on Feb. 4, 2005.

Doctoral students are invited to submit proposals for papers to be delivered at the workshop. Proposals should be a maximum of 500 words and should fall into one of the thematic units listed below, relative to one or more of these countries: Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia, Moldova, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Slovenia, and Turkey.

Possible thematic units include the following:

  • Political Parties and Campaigning in the Post-Communist Era

    These papers should focus on the evolution and development of emerging political parties and their ideologies since 1990, and will examine how political parties and campaign strategies have evolved or been influenced by the transition to democracy.

  • The Development and Impact of NGOs in Southeastern Europe

    These papers should address the importance of nongovernmental organizations in the region and the impact they have on shaping the public sector and civil society. Papers specifically focused on women's roles in the NGO sector are strongly encouraged.

  • The Intellectual History of Southeastern Europe

    These papers should address how intellectuals, ideas, and ideologies have shaped the history of the region, with particular attention to their impact within the political and cultural spheres.
