In August 2001, Gazette photographer Kris Snibbe spent an afternoon with Ernst Mayr. Snibbe was visiting the venerable biologist - who died Feb. 3, 2005 - to shoot a Gazette "Big Picture." Gazette writer Beth Potier wrote the text for the feature. The images Snibbe created, along with Mayr's quotes, give us an intimate glimpse of the scientist's life. The then-97-year-old Mayr was coming into his Harvard office once a week, but he was far from retirement. He was about to publish two books, and his "coffee table was heaped," wrote Potier, with "journals to read and books to review." Following are some images and words of the "Darwin of the 20th century."
